It is the essence of fourteen purvas Its glory is boundless It has infinite meanings Note: There are 14 Purvas (ancient or prior knowledge) in the Jain scriptures (Agams). The Purvas were preached by all the Tirthankars. These discourses (Shrut Jnana or heard knowledge by the Omniscient Tirthankars) were said to encompass all knowledge in the universe. Remember/Recite in good times, remember in bad times Remember in daytime and at night Remember while alive, remember while dying Remember with everyone together Holy men remember, laymen remember Remember [people of] royalty and lower ranks Gods remember, demons remember Everyone remember undoubtingly Know/Consider the sixty-eight letters [of the Navkar Mantra] Equivalent to the essence of 68 holy pilgrimages The eight foundational meanings [of the Navkar Mantra] Help attain the eight attributes of the Sidhdhas - supreme excellence Note: The Navkar Mantra has nine padas (designations). The first seven padas each has a separate meaning while the last two padas together have one meaning, Thus the Navkar Mantra has eight meanings (sampada). The nine lines give nine treasures Destroys the misery of many births With bold commitment/vow establish [this mantra] in your heart It will give the ultimate state of liberation/Godhood |
