I offer my reverential salutations at your feet (Rishabhadev / Adinath - the first Tirthankar) the Supreme Guide of the Path of Jain Dharma. Gods and kings bow (place their crowns) at your feet, submitting in mind, body and in speech. Their delusions are removed and they see true beauty. Their sins are absolved and they are liberated from the birth-rebirth cycle. (1)
I shall humbly try to describe your supreme attributes in words just as many other wise beings have eulogized you in hymns that bring joy to gods, kings and man. (2) It is foolish insolence to try to praise your supreme attributes using inadequate expressions. No wise man would attempt the impossible task of catching the moon through its reflection in water - a childish ignorant action. (3) You have limitless (an ocean of) supreme attributes Even guru of gods (Brahaspati) would not be able to do justice in praising you. It is an impossible task just like swimming across a stormy and turbulent ocean infested with dangerous creatures. (4) Although I know I am incapable of doing full justice in describing you, my devotion is giving me the courage to do so – like how a doe would face a lion in order to save her fawn. (5) Just like how the cuckoo sings sweetly in spring when the mango tree starts to flower, I feel compelled by my devotion to sing your praises though I know it is foolish and will fall far short. (6) Accumulated sins of many births disappear without trace when prayers are said to you Just like all darkness of night disappears with the rays of sunlight. (7) With your grace, I compose this prayer. Your divinity will help bring serenity to listeners (despite my inadequate words) just like how dew drops shine like pearls on the lotus. (8) What can be said of your supreme attributes when the mere mention of your name (uttered in pure devotion) destroys the sins of the notorious - just like how the light of the distant sun can raise the drooping buds of the lotus and make them bloom. (9) Those who praise your attributes with devotion, will attain your level. A master who does not raise his disciple to the master’s own elevated state is not to be recommended (he cannot be a true master himself because of either his ego or his inability). (10) Once a person sees the divine, nothing else is of any interest. Just like after tasting from the ocean of nectar, there is no interest in salty sea water. (11) Lord there is none to match your magnificence. What you are has no equal since you transcend all matter and molecules of this world. (12) The beauty of your serene face is adored (feasted on) by gods and humans. Any comparison of your beauty with the moon falls short since the moon has spots and lacks visibility in daylight. (13) Your supreme attributes radiate throughout the three worlds (universe) – similar to how the full moon’s rays light the earth. You are the source from whence come the three worlds. (14) Celestial nymphs have tried to seduce you but they could not shake your tranquility. Like how doomsday winds can move hills and mountains, yet they have no effect on the great Mount Meru. (15) Lord your divine light illuminates the three worlds – with no need for wick or oil and with no smoke You are the bright lamp which illuminates / enlightens the three worlds and not even the gusty winds which can affect mountains, can shake your light. (16) The sun can be eclipsed, it can be blotted out by clouds, when it sets its light disappears leaving darkness. Your glory is greater than the sun. Your glorious radiance cannot be lessened or eclipsed by any obstacle. (17) Lord your face is ever radiant. It far transcends the beauty of the moon which sets, wanes, can be eclipsed and also hidden by the clouds. Moonlight dispels some darkness on earth but your light dispels universal delusion (the darkness of ignorance and desires). (18) Lord your radiance dispels the perpetual darkness of ignorance It is greater than sunlight and moonlight Just like when the crops in the fields are ripe, there is no need for rain clouds. (19) Lord your omniscience (all-knowing) is envied by other deities It is like comparing the brilliance of diamonds to shiny glass There is no comparison – glass is not of the same status as diamond. (20) While other deities may be good, they are found to be lacking. After seeing you Lord and experiencing the contentment and serenity you radiate, no one else will do. (21) While there are countless stars in every direction, the Sun only rises in the East. Countless women bear sons but a son like you is the ultimate any mother can have. (22) Lord you are brilliant as the sun and free from any delusions. All saints hold you in the highest esteem. They attain immortality when they accept your path as the sure way to liberation. (23) Lord the sages proclaim you as all-pervading, omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient, your form beyond description, with supreme attributes and virtues, one free of all karma, having attained the highest state of purity and living in eternity. (24) Lord you are the Buddha because of your omniscience, you are Shankara because of your omnibenevolence, you are Shiva because of your codes of conduct and beliefs that lead to liberation, you are Purushottam (Vishnu) the supreme soul in ultimate splendor. (25) My obeisance to you Lord, remover of all suffering My obeisance to you Lord, liberator from this worldly existence My obeisance to you Lord, creator of this world in all its beauty My obeisance to you Lord, the Lord of all people. (26) There is no surprise that all the best virtues reside in you (having found no one more suitable). The vices (sins and pride) reside in others since they could not even dream of approaching you. (27) Under the Ashoka tree, you radiate an aura of brilliant pure light from your glowing body. You look like the sun piercing dark clouds with bright rays. (28) Seated on a throne studded with gems of all colors, your shining golden body glows in all directions. Like the sun rising over the mountain sending out bright rays. (29) Celestials fan you with snow-white fans, the effect of which look like sparkling water against your golden body. Just like how the light of the rising moon rolls down the sides of the golden peak of Mount Meru. (30) Over your head is a three-tier canopy which glows white and is bejeweled. It symbolizes your supremacy over the three worlds while shading you from the severe sun. (31) The beats of drums are heard in all directions proclaiming your victory over all attachments and showing your path to be the true path to the highest joy (of liberation). (32) Celestials shower flowers like mandar, sundar, nameru, parijata upon you. Their fragrance is carried by a soft breeze and fills the air. (33) The luminescence of the halo around you is unmatched by any other. It is more brilliant than countless suns yet it is as cool and soothing as moonlight. (34) Your teachings (spoken discourses) are clear and powerful and show the true path of liberation to all seekers. They are understood by all in their own language. (35) Your holy feet are beautiful with glowing nails. Lovely lotuses grow wherever they touch the ground. (36) Lord none has attained the excellence that is in your discourses. Just like no other star is as bright as the sun in dispelling darkness. (37) Lord your true devotees are not shaken by fear even by a raging elephant escaping a swarm of bees. (38) Lord your true devotee has nothing to fear even from a fierce lion who rips open an elephant’s head and scatters bone like blood-tainted pearls, who roars and pounces on prey. A true devotee’s steadfast faith will leave him unscathed (because the lion will not attack him). (39) Even fierce fires fanned by violent gusts of wind with leaping flames that threaten to devour all, are fast extinguished by pouring showers, and lotus flowers bloom, upon the devout recitation of your name. (40) Should your true devotee accidentally step upon a black venomous cobra with rage-filled red eyes, hissing fangs and raised hood, the venom will not harm him because he has your name in his heart. (41) Even formidable armies on a battlefield with trumpeting elephants and neighing horses retreat, like sunlight dispelling darkness, when your true devotee chants your name. (42) In fierce battles where blood is pouring from heads of speared elephants, your true devotee having sought refuge at your feet, will gain victory over his enemy in the end. (43) Through wild turbulent seas infested with crocodiles and terrifying fire, your true devotee chanting your name, will make the journey safely. (44) When the dust from your feet is smoothed over the body of a person disfigured by dropsy and other incurable illness, one who has no hope of recovery, he makes a complete recovery and becomes extremely handsome. (45) For a person who is bound in heavy chains, who suffers cuts and bruises on his thighs due to their tightness, his chains break and he is freed when he takes refuge in you (becomes your true devotee). (46) A person who reads this poem with true devotion will be free of all fears for example, stampeding elephants (crushed), fierce lions (attack), venomous snakes (poison), blazing fire, turbulent seas, horrible illness, fierce battles and harsh imprisonment. (47) This poem praises the Lord’s great virtues and attributes. It is composed of flowery language (like a garland) If taken to heart by the true devotee (as the garland worn around one’s neck) Says Manatunga (author of this poem) one will attract the highest success (liberation).
